Amyris
Essential Oil
Amyris is steam-distilled from Amyris balsamifera, a tropical evergreen tree in the citrus family that is native to the West Indies. Due to its woody-balsamic notes and fixative qualities, amyris is often referred to as West Indian Sandalwood, although the trees are not related botanically. The wood, dense with fragrant oils and resins, is highly flammable, thus this tree is also known Candlewood or Torchwood.
The amyris oil that Alchemy Works sells is distilled only from the fallen branches and dead wood of amyris trees that grow wild in the Dominican Republic. The environmentally friendly work of removing the dry wood from the forest floor allows young trees to thrive and prevents forest fires. Our supplier is committed to sustainability and has been stewarding the Dominican Republic's amyris forests for generations.
Though we have not found much written about the magical qualities of amyris, traditionally it has been used to improve sleep quality, enhance meditation, and as a fragrance and fixative in perfumery. Recent research suggests that amyris essential oil can lower stress, ease muscle tension, and even enhance cognition, especially for those with dementia. Connected to Jupiter, its uplifting yet calming fragrance – warm balsamic and woody notes followed by a hint of vanilla-like sweetness – can improve mood and aid in concentration.
