In many mystical traditions, working with the four philosophic 'Elements' of creation is considered part of foundational practice. These concepts can be utilized toward sensing and understanding the more subtle forces at work within and around us, as well for a great deal of mind-training and self-hypnosis. A myriad of rituals and meditations center around the balancing of these forces--externally and internally--to enhance our own wisdom and equilibrium, as both magical practitioners and students of the world.
In addition, many witches, mystics, and occultists also attempt to forge alliances with the external spirits who govern these forces. These Four Quarters incenses are designed with all of the above in mind. Similar in many ways to our Hermetic Golden Dawn Angelic Incenses, these four ritually-hand-crafted suffumigations are not formulated to be aligned with any particular deity or thoughtform, but were designed instead to create an intense and permeating elemental atmosphere at each burning.
The famous (and infamous) Swiss alchemist Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, better known to the world as Paracelsus, gave general names to the spirits of the four elements nearly five centuries ago that occultists still use to this day. These incenses have thus been named in their honor: Salamander, Sylph, Undine, and Gnome.
